The opening weekend of the 2008-09 Texas A&M International University athletics season is in the books. All five of TAMIU's fall sports programs competed over the Labor Day weekend. Men's soccer had an outstanding weekend, winning both games at the RiverHawks Classic. The tournament was hosted by Lone Star Conference member Northeastern State, located in Tahlequah, Okla. The Dustdevils defeated Missouri Southern on Friday and host NSU on Sunday by identical 2-1 scores. Women's soccer dropped both of its season-opening games, both played on the road. The Dustdevils fell 4-0 to Our Lady of the Lake on Thursday and 3-1 to UT-Brownsville on Sunday. The volleyball team went 0-4 at the West Texas A&M Tournament. The Dustdevils lost to Abilene Christian and Fort Hays State on Friday and West Texas A&M and Fort Lewis College on Saturday. Both cross country teams competed at the Incarnate Word Relays on Saturday. The men finished in fifth place in the team standings. Robert Coronado was the top individual finisher on the men's side with a 29th place finish. The women ran as individuals with Marlene Gutíerrez taking top team honors with a seventh place finish. Stats for all events will be posted on the TAMIU Athletics web site by Monday afternoon. |
