Final Stats

St. Edward's defeated Texas A&M International University 6-2 in day one action of the Heartland Conference Tournament on Thursday afternoon at Diane Daniels Field on the SEU campus in Austin. TAMIU opened the tournament with a 13-11 win over UT-Permian Basin earlier in the day.

SEU scored five runs off TAMIU starter Clarissa Salinas in the third inning to jump out to a 6-0 lead. A fielder's choice RBI ground out by Victoria Beltrán combined with an infield error allowed TAMIU to cut the deficit to 6-2 in the fifth inning but that's as close as the Dustdevils would get.

Salinas (6-10) took the loss after allowing six runs on nine hits in 3.0 innings. Beltrán contributed three innings of shutout relief work but besides the two-run fifth the Dustdevil offense could not get on track to get back into the game.

SEU out-hit TAMIU 11-5. Lady Hilltopper relief pitcher Diana Cezeaux earned the save after closing the game with three shutout innings. She allowed only one hit, a sixth inning two-out single by Angel Montejano.

TAMIU will play an elimination game on Friday at 12:30 p.m. against the winner of this afternoon's UT Permian Basin vs. Incarnate Word contest.
