Texas A&M International University defeated Newman 7-2 in Heartland Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Dustdevil Field. The result wraps up a three-game sweep of the Jets while improving TAMIU's record to 6-0 in conference play. Three Newman errors led to an unearned TAMIU (10-15 overall) run in the second inning. Janelle Ruiz then scored on a wild pitch in the fourth inning to push the Dustdevils to a 2-1 lead. TAMIU came out swinging in the fifth inning, taking control of the game with four runs scored on six hits. Briana Sánchez led off that frame with a single to left field. Angel Montejano followed Sánchez with a two-run home run shot to dead center field. It was her first homer of the season. Victoria Beltrán kept the pressure on by following Montejano with a line drive home run over the left field fence. The scoring in the fifth inning was capped by a RBI single up the middle by Marina Vásquez. Vásquez (3-6) earned the win for the Dustdevils with a complete game effort. She allowed two runs on six hits in 7.0 innings. TAMIU out-hit Newman 11-6. Montejano led the Dustdevil offense with a 4-for-4 day at the plate. TAMIU will have a busy Spring Break next week. The Dustdevils will play non-conference doubleheaders at Tarleton State on Tuesday and West Texas A&M on Wednesday before playing a three-game Heartland Conference series at UT-Permian Basin next weekend. |
