Sept. 7, 2007 Texas A&M International University's women's soccer team broke into the win column in a big way on Friday afternoon at Dustdevil Field. TAMIU posted a landmark 3-2 win over Angelo State to improve to 1-4 for the young season while dropping the NSCAA regionally-ranked Rambelles to 2-1-1. The win was Texas A&M International's first in five games against a Lone Star Conference opponent. TAMIU entered the game 0-3 all-time against Angelo State and 0-1 against LSC member Texas Woman's. The Dustdevils exploded for three goals in the first 20 minutes of play to stake a 3-0 lead over a stunned ASU squad. Freshman Melissa Medrano got the scoring started by lining a penalty kick into the net from 30 yards out in the 13th minute. Laredo native and United High School graduate Brittany Merritt then scored in the 16th and 19th minutes to boost TAMIU to an insurmountable lead. Maxine Caballero assisted on the first Merritt score with Rachel Carranza getting the credit for the assist on what would prove to be the game winner. Both of Merritt's goals were short range shots made possible by an aggressive Dustdevil offense. TAMIU outshot Angelo State 14-8 for the afternoon with an 11-5 advantage in shots on goal. Mary Jo Hall recorded three saves for the Dustdevils. ASU scored twice in the second half, getting the second goal on a penalty kick by Christian Willman in the 87th minute. No other shots were taken the rest of the game, earning TAMIU it's well deserved win. TAMIU returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 16 with a road game against Lone Star Conference member Texas A&M-Commerce. Kickoff is scheduled for noon in Commerce. |
