UT-Brownsville defeated Texas A&M International 3-1 in women's soccer action on Monday afternoon at Dustdevil Field. UTB took a 2-0 halftime lead on the strength of two goals by Lena Candia. The junior from Malmo, Sweden scored on a header off of a corner kick in the 31st minute and before putting a loose ball in from 12 yards out in the 31st minute. TAMIU sophomore Sandy Hernandez connected from 20 yards out less than a minute into the second half to cut the Scorpion lead to 2-1. TAMIU would control the tempo in the second half but would get no closer than that margin. The Dustdevils outshot the Scorpions 6-1 in the second half. Candia sealed the victory for UT-Brownsville with a left to right shot into the net in the 88th minute. Jacqueline Ruiz finished with seven saves for UTB while Mary Ho Hall recorded three stops for the Dustdevils. TAMIU (0-2) returns to action with its Heartland Conference opener at Incarnate Word on Friday. Kickoff is schedule for 5 p.m. at the UIW campus in San Antonio. |
