The past and present of Texas A&M International University men's soccer met on Monday night at Dustdevil Field when the current varsity squad faced former TAMIU players in the annual Alumni Game. Nearly 20 alumni returned to take part in an event that is quickly becoming a treasured tradition.

The strong turnout by the alumni is due in large part to the efforts of Juan "Chelelo" García, a former Dustdevil who now serves as associate director of the TAMIU Office of Recruitment and School Relations.

The alumni presented head coach Claudio Arias with a check for $1,000 at halftime of the game. Arias says he appreciates the support of former players and just as importantly, enjoys the family atmosphere of the alumni game.

"The best part of this evening wasn't the check but rather catching up with the lives of our former players," Arias said.

"We have something really special with this game and I encourage our other programs to start a similar tradition. I really appreciate Chelelo's efforts in getting everything organized."

Speaking for the alumni, García says it is important for his group to show support for the program.

"Our players face demands of being both students and athletes," García said.

"They spend time practicing, traveling, and playing to represent our university across the state. The least that we can do is support them."
