Sept. 5, 2007 UT-Permian Basin edged Texas A&M International 2-1 in double overtime in men's soccer action on Wednesday afternoon at Dustdevil Field. It was the Heartland Conference opener for both teams. Carlos Guillen scored the game-winner for UTPB (2-1, 1-0 Heartland) when he popped the ball over TAMIU goalkeeper Noé Pantoja's head from short range in the 108th minute after receiving a pass from Erik Carillo. The ball rolled into the goal to provide the Falcons with a hard-fought win. Carillo opened the scoring for UTPB with a line drive into the net from 25 yards out in the fifth minute. TAMIU's Leonardo Calvo made a run through several defenders before connecting on a goal with only 16 seconds remaining in the first half to tie the score 1-1 at the break. Gage Peterson made nine saves for UTPB while Pantoja recorded six saves for the Dustdevils. TAMIU (1-1, 0-1) returns to action on Friday with a conference tilt against Newman. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Dustdevil Field. |
