April 21, 2009 Texas A&M International University Athletics Director Dr. Debbie Snell announced today that basketball legend John Lucas will serve as guest speaker at the annual TAMIU Athletics Banquet. The banquet will be held on Thursday, Apr. 30 at the Student Center Ballroom on campus. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. The banquet honors accomplishments of student-athletes from all 11 of TAMIU's NCAA Division II athletic teams. Admission is open to the public at the cost of $25 per person. To purchase tickets or for more information contact the TAMIU Athletics Office at 326-3000 during normal business hours. Lucas earned All-American honors in basketball and tennis at the University of Maryland before beginning a 14-year NBA career in 1976. His career included stops with the Houston Rockets and San Antonio Spurs. After ending his playing career, Lucas served stints as head coach for three NBA teams from 1992 - 2004. He is an established businessman who has dedicated much time and effort to helping those inflicted with chemical dependency the power to gain control of their lives. Lucas is also continuing his legacy in basketball by developing players from high school through the professional ranks. |
