Fort Lewis College edged Texas A&M International University 88-85 in overtime on Friday night at the St. Edward's Classic in Austin. Fort Lewis (1-0) is picked to win the Rocky Mountain Conference West Division in the league's preseason poll. TAMIU led 61-51 with nine minutes remaining in regulation but Fort Lewis would go on a 18-2 run to take a 69-63 lead with a little under four minutes remaining. The Dustdevils closed out the first half with a 5-0 run to tie the score at 73-73 at the end of regulation. TAMIU opened overtime with a fury and Chris Swan's three-pointer gave TAMIU an 80-74 lead a minute and twenty seconds into the extra period. Fort Lewis fought back and took its first lead at 86-84 on two free throws with 11 seconds remaining. Ignacio García then made and missed one free throw for the Dustdevils. The game ended with a Fort Lewis dunk at the buzzer. Swan finished with a career-high 36 points for TAMIU while also contributing a team-high nine rebounds. Sean Tucker added 18 points with García finishing with 13 points. TAMIU (0-2) will conclude tournament play on Saturday against Midwestern State. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:15 p.m. |
