Texas A&M International University baseball fans will see a familiar face when they attend a Laredo Broncos' game this summer. Former TAMIU standout Ryan Flynn is returning for his second season of professional baseball with the Broncos.

A native of Pennsylvania, Flynn played one season at Allegany College before transferring to TAMIU in 2007. He concluded his Dustdevil career in 2009 as a three-time All-Heartland Conference selectee, earning first-team honors at second base as a junior and senior.

Flynn is the TAMIU's career leader with 171 hits, 121 RBI and 108 runs scored. He also tallied nine home runs and 30 RBI during his standout career with the Dustdevils.

Flynn is a versatile infielder who can play second base, shortstop and third base. He made an impact defensively last season but had a little trouble adjusting to professional pitching. Flynn says he worked on his approach to hitting during the offseason and he is better prepared to find a way to get on base every time he steps into the batter's box; --whether it be a base hit, hit by pitch or walk.

With a bachelor's degree in fitness and sports already in hand, Flynn is pursuing a master's in curriculum and instruction from TAMIU. He says that making his way to TAMIU and Laredo has turned out to be a positive life-changing experience.

"I was really home sick the first semester I arrived and was almost ready to look for another school but the people of Laredo, (then) coach Mark Jackson, the TAMIU athletic staff, professors and advisors were all very supportive and they convinced me to stay," Flynn said.

"I am thrilled to be playing professional baseball with the Broncos while continuing my academic pursuits at TAMIU. I want to play for the Broncos for many years to come and give it my all to help win a championship for José Melendez, TAMIU and the City of Laredo."

Broncos manager Dan Firova says that it is evident that Flynn is committed to improving his game and making a contribution.

"Ryan played great defensively last season and we hope that he can become a more well-rounded player in multiple facets this season," Firova said. "He has made good strides throughout the offseason and spring training to improve his bat."

The Broncos will play home games at Laredo's historic Veterans Field, located at 2200 Santa Maria Avenue. The season will run through the end of August with all home games scheduled for a 7:35 p.m. start.
