May 9, 2009 St. Mary's outslugged Texas A&M International University in a wild season finale for both teams on Saturday afternoon at Dustdevil Field. A 10th inning grand slam was the difference in the 13-9 win for the Rattlers. The game went back-and-forth through the first six innings with St. Mary's holding a 6-5 lead after six. The Rattlers seemingly took an insurmountable 9-5 lead with a three-run top of the ninth inning. Zeke Sosa drilled a one-out grand slam over the left field wall, however, in the bottom of the ninth to tie the score. It was his team-leading ninth home run of the season. St. Mary's had their own clutch hitter in the top of the tenth inning. Grant Harrleson, who had entered the game as a defensive replacement, drilled a two-out line drive grand slam over the left field wall to give the Rattlers a 13-9 lead. The Dustdevils were retired in order in the bottom of the tenth by Jonathan Pérez to preserve the win for St. Mary's. Roger González took the loss in a relief role. He allowed six runs on four hits in 2.0 innings of work. All three seniors playing in their final game for the home team made a contribution for the Dustdevils. Ryan Flynn finished with two hits, Danny Cornejo a RBI double and José Sánchez Jr. a triple. |
