Cross Country Starts Stretch Run

Oct. 4, 2007

Texas A&M International University cross country starts the stretch run towards the upcoming Heartland Conference Championships this Saturday in San Antonio. The Dustdevils will compete in the Incarnate Invitational, which will be held at the San Antonio State School. The women's 5K will start at 7:30 a.m. with the men's 8K start slated for an 8 a.m. start.

TAMIU's men finished ninth and the women finished 12th in the team standings at last weekend's Islander Splash in Corpus Christi. TAMIU head coach Benny Rodríguez says that while the course was tough last weekend the men have some work to do before the Heartland Conference championships, slated for Oct. 27 in San Antonio.

"We had a tough outing last weekend," Rodríguez said. "We have to scratch that one off and work through some of the mental mistakes we made. We have three weeks until conference and our training will sharpen soon."

On the women's side, Rodríguez was pleased with his team's overall performance.

"All of our women ran personal best times at the Islander meet. Everyone ran strong to the end and it showed in the results."
